SuperFOIL Insulation — Slim Insulation for Tight Spaces
Multifoil insulation is made of layers of reflective foil and wadding. It is much thinner than mineral wool, which makes it useful in rooms in the roof, extensions and other places where depth is limited.
Traditional loft insulation needs around 270mm of depth, which is not always possible — for example in a loft conversion or a sloping ceiling. What Is SuperFOIL?
Multifoil insulation combines several reflective foil layers with wadding or foam. The foil reflects radiant heat and the layers between add resistance. How well it performs depends on the product and, crucially, on correct installation — including any air gaps and taped joints the manufacturer specifies.
How It Works
Assessment
The installer looks at where the insulation will go, the space available, ventilation and the Building Regulations requirements for that part of the home.
Design
The product and build-up are chosen, often with other insulation, so the finished roof or wall meets the required U-value.
Installation
Sheets are fixed to rafters, joists or studs, with joints overlapped and taped and battens used to form any air gaps.
Finishing
Plasterboard or another finish goes on, keeping the air gaps and ventilation the design relies on.
Is It Right for My Home?
Multifoil insulation is mainly used in loft conversions and rooms in the roof, sloping ceilings, extensions, garden rooms and floors where there is not enough depth for thicker insulation. For an ordinary open loft floor, mineral wool laid to 270mm is usually the simpler, cheaper choice.
