Not every saving needs building work. Good heating controls, LED bulbs and a few habits can trim your bills for a modest outlay.
Heating is the biggest part of most energy bills, so controlling when and where you heat your home matters more than lighting. Lighting is a small part of the average bill, but LED bulbs are one of the easiest upgrades. The Energy Saving Trust notes that app-controlled "smart bulbs" offer more control but are not likely to save energy on their own.

What Is LED & Smart?
Heating controls let your heating run only when and where it is needed: a programmer or timer sets when it comes on, a room thermostat sets the temperature, and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) control individual rooms. Smart thermostats add app control and scheduling. LED bulbs use far less electricity than halogen bulbs for the same brightness.

Note whether you have a programmer, a room thermostat and TRVs, and which bulbs are still halogen.
Swap Bulbs
Replace halogen bulbs with LEDs, matching the fitting and choosing by lumens (brightness) rather than watts.
Add Controls
Fit any missing programmer, thermostat or TRVs. A heating engineer can check compatibility with your boiler.
Set Them Well
Set the thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature — for most people between 18°C and 21°C — and heat rooms only when they are used.
Is It Right for My Home?
Every home can benefit. LED bulbs fit standard fittings, though some old dimmer switches may need replacing. Heating controls work with most boiler and heat pump systems; ask a heating engineer if you are unsure.
